Allergies and asthma, can allergies
affect my asthma!? If so how can
I prevent it?

Allergies and asthma is a bad combination, because asthma symptoms can be triggered by allergens. This reaction is called allergic asthma, which is commonly triggered by allergens like dust mites, pollen (trees, grass, and flowers), chemicals such as perfumes and mold spores.

Allergy is a condition, where the human immune system malfunctions when in contact with a substance that is not necessary harmful at all.

These substances can vary and can also have different affect on different people.

The substance that affects people with allergy is called allergens.

Below is a list of examples of food allergens only:

• Nuts (peanuts)

• Milk

• Soya

• Egg

• Cheese

• Fish

• Wheat

There are also allergens, such as bee venom, pet dander, dust mite, pollen and so on...

The most common time of the year where allergies affects asthmatics is the spring season. This is because

there is a lot of pollen in the air, which we breathe in and then causes us to sneeze, cough and affects our breathing. The airways are also irritated which causes asthma symptoms to occur.

Although spring is well known for allergy cases, it can affect asthmatics at any time of the year. Asthma symptoms can appear, because of sneezing caused by dust or having being around pets.

Sneezing can be a cause for symptoms, because the airways react very easily to irritants that causes inflammation and mucus build up.

I can always tell when my condition is starting to get bad, because I cannot sneeze in a normal way. I cannot take a deep enough breath to sneeze, because my lung feels tighten and that prevents me from sneezing properly.

In order to prevent allergies and asthma, it is important to keep your house clean from dust mite.

To help reduce allergies and asthma you should:

  • Ensure that you hover if you have carpets, because carpets can attract a lot of dust as I am sure you are aware of. Dust of your bed sheets and pillows regularly. Try to keep home appliances dust free and mop floors regularly if you have flooring in your house.

  • It would be much better to have polished floors than carpets, because this means less dust for you to deal with.

  • Wear a disposable dust mask so that you cannot breathe in any dust when you are cleaning.

  • Take a shower before going to bed to wash away any pollen or dust your hair or body hairs might be carrying.

  • Clean shower curtains or any damp areas in your home as they can produce mold, which is bad for your health in general, but worse for asthmatics. You might want to consider opening your windows and doors when possible to help increase air humidity in your house, which can decline the chances of mold forming in your house.

  • Air purifiers are very good with helping to keep the air in your room(s) fresh, because it filters the air in your room and releases fresh air.
